Deposit EUR 11,904 into a German blocked account via Fintiba or Expatrio. The bank releases EUR 992 per month once you arrive.

Visa application

Student visa filed at the German embassy or consulate in your home country. Supporting documents include admission letter, blocked account proof, language certificate, and health insurance confirmation.

Anmeldung and enrolment

Register your address (Anmeldung) within 14 days of arrival, enrol at the university, and obtain statutory health insurance. Your residence permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis) is then issued by the local Auslanderbehorde.

Honest answers

Germany study visa questions for 2026.

  • For most public universities across the majority of German federal states, yes. Baden-Wurttemberg is the main exception, charging non-EU students EUR 1,500 per semester for bachelor and master programs. All states charge a semester fee of roughly EUR 100-350 for administration, transport, and student services. Private institutions charge market rates. We select programs based on your funding model.

  • For German-taught programs, B2 German (TestDaF or DSH) is typically required. English-taught master's programs, which have grown significantly at German research universities and Fachhochschulen, accept IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL iBT 90+. You do not need to reach B1 German until you want to accelerate your PR timeline under the EU Blue Card.

  • Germany grants an 18-month post-study job-seeker permit (Aufenthaltserlaubnis zur Arbeitsplatzsuche) under Section 20 of the Residence Act. You can work any job during this period while searching for a role that matches your qualification. The permit is non-renewable, so we coach job-search strategy from semester three onwards.

  • On an EU Blue Card, 21 months of qualifying employment with B1 German language level unlocks the Niederlassungserlaubnis (settlement permit). With A1 German the wait is 27 months. We time your German language tests to the 21-month window from your first Blue Card issue date.
