Five routes to Australian PR. We pick the one your points win.

Every skilled stream is points-tested and invitation-based. The 189 lets you live anywhere; the 190 and 491 tie you to a nominating state or region; the 186 is employer-driven; the National Innovation Visa targets targeted-sector talent and investors. SkillSelect sets the real cutoff, so we read the recent rounds before we file.

Permanent residence programs

The Australian PR routes we file most.

Every route below leads to permanent residence, or to the regional provisional visa that does. Each runs through the points test and SkillSelect, and each deserves a read of the current rounds before it is filed.

Skilled Independent (Subclass 189)

A permanent, points-tested visa for skilled workers with no employer, state, or family sponsor. Holders can live and work anywhere in Australia. It needs an occupation on the skilled list, a positive skills assessment, age under 45, competent English, and a points score high enough to win an invitation.

Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190)

A permanent visa nominated by an Australian state or territory, which adds 5 points and an initial commitment to live in the nominating state. It is the stream that opens when an occupation is in a state list but the independent cutoff is out of reach.

Explore pathway

Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491)

A 5-year provisional visa for regional Australia, sponsored by a state or an eligible relative for 15 extra points. It leads to permanent residence through the 191 after three years of regional living, work, and earnings above the threshold.

Explore pathway

Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)

A permanent, employer-sponsored visa in three streams: Direct Entry, Temporary Residence Transition, and Labour Agreement. The transition stream moves holders of the Skills in Demand (482) visa to permanent residence after the required period with the nominating employer.

Explore pathway

National Innovation Visa (Subclass 858)

The visa that replaced the Global Talent visa and the Business Innovation and Investment Program in December 2024, now the single route for exceptionally talented individuals, entrepreneurs, and investors in the targeted sectors the government names each year.

How we match you to a stream

Four filing lanes. The right one depends on your points and your sponsor.

Go independent (189)
Go independent (189)

No sponsor, no state, live anywhere. We score your points test honestly, confirm your occupation is on the list, and build the EOI that maximises your rank before SkillSelect invites.

Backed by a state (190/491)
Backed by a state (190/491)

A state or eligible relative nominates you for bonus points, opening streams the independent cutoff closes. We match your occupation to a state with an open list before you commit.

Sponsored to PR (186)
Sponsored to PR (186)

Your Australian employer nominates you for permanent residence, by direct entry or after your Skills in Demand visa. We run the nomination and time the transition so nothing lapses.

National Innovation (858)
National Innovation (858)

After the Global Talent and Business Innovation programs closed, the National Innovation Visa is the route for targeted-sector talent, entrepreneurs, and investors. We shape the distinction case.

How an Australian PR file gets built

Four stages, sequenced to score you before you spend a dollar.

Skills assessment & English

Your occupation confirmed on the skilled list, a positive skills assessment from the right assessing authority, and an English test booked at the band that maximises your points.

EOI on SkillSelect

An expression of interest lodged with your points claim and stream choice, so you are visible to state nomination and to the invitation rounds that follow.

Invitation & nomination

An invitation to apply for the 189, or a state nomination secured for the 190 or 491, timed so the application window is open rather than already closed for your occupation.

Visa grant & PR

The full application filed inside the invitation window, then the visa grant and permanent residence, or for the 491 the regional provisional visa and its path to the 191.

Honest answers

The questions that decide your Australian PR strategy.

  • Points are awarded for age, English, skilled employment, and education, with bonuses for state nomination, regional sponsorship, a partner, and Australian study. The 65 pass mark is the statutory minimum to submit an expression of interest, but the invitations Home Affairs issues in each SkillSelect round go to the highest-ranked profiles, so the score that actually wins an invitation is usually higher and shifts with every round. We estimate your points and read the recent rounds before advising.

  • The 189 is independent and permanent, needs no sponsor, and lets you live anywhere. The 190 is permanent but requires nomination by an Australian state, which adds 5 points and an initial commitment to that state. The 491 is a 5-year provisional visa for regional Australia, sponsored by a state or an eligible relative for 15 extra points, and it leads to permanent residence through the 191 after three years of regional living and work.

  • The 189, 190, and 186 are permanent from grant. The 491 is provisional, but it carries a clear path to the 191 permanent visa once you have lived, worked, and earned above the threshold in regional Australia for three years. Whether you go straight to PR or through the regional route depends on your occupation, your points, and which states have open streams.

  • Yes. The Employer Nomination Scheme (186) grants permanent residence, either by Direct Entry or through the Temporary Residence Transition stream once you hold a Skills in Demand (482) visa and have worked for your nominating employer for the required period. We time the employer nomination and the transition so there is no gap.

  • Both closed. The Global Talent visa (858) closed to new applications in December 2024, and the Business Innovation and Investment Program closed to new applicants earlier in 2024. They were replaced by the National Innovation Visa (subclass 858), now the single route for exceptionally talented individuals, entrepreneurs, and investors in the targeted sectors the government names each year. Existing participants in the closed programs continue on their current path.

  • Only for the 190 and the 491; the 189 is independent. A nomination is valuable because it adds points and can open streams the independent cutoff closes, but states open and close their occupation lists through the year. We match your occupation to a state with an open stream before you commit to one.

  • Yes, substantially. The 2024 reform replaced the old temporary skilled visa with the Skills in Demand visa, closed the Business Innovation and Investment Program and the Global Talent visa, and launched the National Innovation Visa. The skilled points streams (189, 190, 491) remain, with invitation rounds run through SkillSelect. We check the current program status and the latest rounds before any filing.
